In honor of Abraham Lincoln's birthday and as part of our traditional Presidents' week celebration, we made stove pipe hats and received a large penny to commemorate Lincoln's contribution to our wonderful country.
One of the favorite crafts that we have done every year that I've taught preschool, is to build a "log cabin". It requires a lot of Elmer's glue and the stick pretzels. We carefully cut a hole in the window and add a real penny with Lincoln's silhouette showing. We talk about how young Abraham Lincoln taught himself to read by firelight and that he had to work on the land. He was known as "Honest Abe" because the legend goes that he walked miles to return the overage of change he was given. Lincoln was a great man, leader, and president and the preschoolers enjoyed learning about him.
